Molecular Surface Engineering

Our Molecular Surface Engineering group is part of the Laboratory of Organic Chemistry at Wageningen University & Research.

The main focus of our research is on the development and application of surface modification strategies to tune the surface properties in terms of selectivity. In the field of (bio)chemical sensing a variety of solid transducer surfaces, including silicon nanowires, diamond, glass, gold and other metals, are functionalised with (bio)organic molecules. Additionally, membranes are chemically functionalized to control the separation of organic solvents as well as the recovery of nutrients from waste streams. The range of coating processes stretches from nanometer-scale approaches via organic monolayers and layer-by-layer depositions to micrometer-scale methods by the deposition of polymer films.
