Radiation generated during the uniform motion of an object in a randomly nonuniform elastic system

Summary. The uniform motion of a harmonically varying load along an infinite string on randomly inhomogeneous continuous elastic foundation is considered. It is supposed that the random variation of the foundation stiffness is small. Equation for the average displacement of the string is obtained. It is shown that in average the effect of the random inhomogeneity on the forced  string vibrations is the same as the effect of a frequency-dependent viscosity. Both the random inhomogeneity and the viscosity limit the resonance vibrations of the string and decelerate the motion of the load.
