Instability of vibration of a moving oscillator on a flexibly supported Timoshenko beam

Summary. The stability of vertical vibration of a two-mass oscillator moving uniformly along a Timoshenko beam on a visco-elastic foundation is studied. By using integral transforms the characteristic equation for the oscillator vibration is obtained. It is shown that this equation may have a root with a positive real part. Existence of such a root leads to the exponential growth of the amplitude of the oscillator vibration, i.e. to instability. The reasons for the instability to occur are discussed. By employing a method of D-decomposition the instability domains are found in the space of the system parameters.
