Summary of the master project:
At Philips Research Laboratories, Eindhoven
research is done on phase change recording. During this process a laser
beam is focused on a small spot. Due to the heat from this laser beam
the material changes from a crystal phase into an amorphous phase. At
this moment phase change is the best method for rewritable optical
recording. In order to obtain a good model for the recording
process it is necessary also to model the optical part of the process.
This means the propagation of light in the optical disk and the
adsorption of the electromagnetic energy. This process can be modelled
by the software package Cyclop, which is based on Sepran.
The aim of the Masters project is to solve a 3 dimensional heat problem
by Sepran, coupled with the optical problem solved by Cyclop.
After this a number of simulations has to be done, in order to obtain
the first computational results on phase change recording.
