Summary of the master project:
The ability to computationally solve partial differential equations on surfaces is central to many applications; e.g., numerical weather prediction. This study is focused on physically accurate simulations of biological fluidic surfaces such as lipid bilayers. These can be thought of as the envelopes for eukaryotic cell contents and they are versatile structures that behave as in-plane viscous fluids and out-of-plane solids. A finite element framework for studying these membranes will be developed as part of this project.
